COW & THE MOON, Enmore

Enmore’s Cow & the Moon is the place for gelato in the Inner West. That’s to be expected from a restaurant that was named the World’s Best Gelato Makers in 2014 during the Gelato World Tour title in Rimini, Italy. There are 25 flavours to try, including some unusual but delicious combos like strawberry balsamic vinegar and pannacotta or fig and marscapone. And if dairy isn’t your thing, they also have a wide range of delicious and completely vegan sorbets.

Black Star Pastry is famous as the home of the ‘most Instagrammed dessert in the world’, the Strawberry Watermelon Cake. But if you live in the Inner West, you know it as much more than that. Pastry chef and owner, Christopher Thé makes all his pastries by hand, using seasonal ingredients and marrying flavours that are as surprising as they are unforgettable. Try the Lemon Myrtle Chiffon Cake that showcases the Australian native in a traditional sponge, or the ‘Delicious Cake’ created in honour of Delicious Magazine’s 10th Anniversary and featuring coconut cake and toasted meringue. Oh, and did we mention there are savoury delights and great coffee too?

Bánh mì – this diminutive white roll filled with any combination of pork, paté, mayonnaise, fresh and pickled veg and spicy chilli has been commanding devoted eaters since Marrickville Pork Roll opened for business in 2008. The queues may snake out along the block from this little nook of a shopfront on Illawarra Road, but don’t let that put you off. The usual time from order toeating is about 60 seconds.

Thai Pothong is a grandfather of Inner West restaurants having first opened its doors to customers over 20 years ago. But the food remains contemporary and utterly delicious. In fact, Thai Pothong is consistently touted as one of the best Thai restaurants in Sydney. The menu is long and varied, but with items like Golden Egg Pastry Tartlets, Betel Leaf Prawns and Four Season Fish, you really can’t go wrong. Best, you can order online for pick up. Easy and delicious.

Signature pink and dog-friendly, Cuckoo Callay embodies all the quirky goodness of the Inner West. And the Surry Hills venue, with its sunlit interiors and broad windows, is widely known as one of the most pleasant places to eat in all of Sydney.

This might be a café but don’t expect typical café food. Instead the food is highly technical and hand crafted. Think French toast with caramelised white chocolate and fairy floss, or mac & cheese with a 63˚ poached egg. Bring your dog for the housemade maple bacon dog treats and while away the morning with other Inner West dog lovers.

Turkish ice cream must be experienced to be believed. Handmade by husband and wife team Nev and Zeyneb Bagriyanik using a pulling and stretching technique, this ice cream is a blend of cow and goats milk and uses a while orchid root called salep to give it texture, stretchiness and chewiness. In fact, it is served with a knife and fork. The flavours are highly unique as well. Try grape molasses and tahini, or melon and feta if you’re feeling adventurous.

Don’t forget to try the Turkish delight and baklava, which are also all made by hand. Finish with a thick Turkish coffee to get you through the inevitable post-sugar rush slump.
